The reference scale made of carbon fiber is dimensionally stable, has a low weight, high strength and high production accuracy. The carbon fiber material has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion. This ensures dimensional accuracy even at temperatures that deviate from the calibration temperature.
Two precise reference spheres are attached to the rod. These are made of a dimensionally stable special plastic.
The distance between the centers of the spheres is determined with high precision for each rod individually using a coordinate measuring machine.
The reference scale can be used to quickly subject the device to a simple field test. This allows you to regularly check your scanner yourself. Another application is to check the scanner on site after transportation.
If measurements with high accuracy are taken from scan data, you can position the reference sphere rod in the corresponding scans as an independent control dimension.
For handheld scanners, you can also use the dimension as a reference for the scan; it can be used as a control distance for distance improvement in the software. Please note that only a limited measuring range over the length of the reference rod can be considered reliable.

Please note
The reference scale bar is a simple and manageable way of roughly checking scan systems. However, it cannot replace the extensive measurement procedures and measurement geometries that are carried out by the manufacturer during inspection or calibration. If deviations or discrepancies are detected, you should always inform the manufacturer.
Please note that the determination of the sphere center points is an essential part of the determination. It is important to ensure that there are sufficient measuring points on the spheres. The determination of the sphere center points also depends on the sphere detection algorithm of the software used. Depending on the algorithms used, different sphere radii or center points may occur. This applies in particular to automated sphere detection.
